What’s this?
Picture this: Giving your favorite person a top-secret envelope concealed with a case file folder straight from the scenes of a detective movie, brimming with incriminating evidence and clandestine documents.
But here’s the kicker: it’s actually a birthday or anniversary card! As soon as they open it, they’re thrust into a wild role-play investigation, with themselves as the prime suspect.
The Inspiration Behind This Design.
As a total crime documentary buff, I had an absolute blast developing this card idea for my boyfriend—I mean, who knew playing detective could be so much fun? Crafting this “FBI Case File” card was like being on the set of my mystery crime series, and let me tell you, the result was killer.
I whipped up this bad boy as a birthday surprise for my boyfriend, but honestly, it’s good for multiple occasion that calls for a gift that’s way cooler than your average card. I raided my office stash for supplies—case files, envelopes, sticky notes, you name it. ..And with a little creative designing and printing magic, I turned that boring old office gear into a seriously top-notch secret dossier card!

Instructions: How to Make It
Step 1: Preparation of the Card Structure (Prepping all the components beforehand will streamline your creation process.)
A. Cut out all the SVG files on vinyl.
- “CONFIDENTIAL” LABEL on RED VINYL (1)
- “TOP SECRET” LABEL on RED VINYL (1)
- “FBI” LOGO on BLACK VINYL (1)
- “CASE FILE” LABEL on BLACK VINYL (1)
- [OPTIONAL] “FOOTPRINTS” or “MAGNIFYING GLASS” in BLACK VINYL
- [OPTIONAL] “POLAROID” on WHITE CARDSTOCK
Step 2: Customize the Card Envelope and Case File Structure (It is easier to create the structure of the card first before personalizing it to suit the receiver.)
A. On the envelope, use transfer tape to place the “CONFIDENTIAL” vinyl onto the envelope in the way you prefer.
B. On the front of the case file, use transfer tape to place the “FBI Logo”, “TOP SECRET VINYL”, and “CASE FILE” labels onto the envelope in the way you prefer.
C. Paste the Name Tag onto the folder’s tab.
Step 3: Creating the LEFT Side of the Card (This side holds the incident report and fun decorations.)
A. Customize and Print out the “INCIDENT REPORT”. (You can type onto the template or print it out to add a personal touch.
B. On the “INCIDENT REPORT”, I would typically fill it out with the suspect/card receiver’s physical characteristics. In the incident portion of the document, I would play around and describe a significant date/incident that was memorable between the two of you.
C. Use the Polaroid template to add a candid mugshot or a paparazzi photo to add authenticity to the case file card and for giggles.
Step 4: Creating the RIGHT side of the Card (This side holds the FBI letterhead and evidence forms.)
A. The document on top would be the “FBI LETTERHEAD” and I used this document to write my main message to the card receiver. Think of it as the opening note that they look at! Everything that you would write in a happy birthday/anniversary card, you would write it here! You can be fun and tell the receiver what they are being accused of and then explain that you have captured incriminating evidence against them in the following sheets.
B. This is where I had the most fun! Gather evidence and document it on each “EVIDENCE” work sheet. You can reuse this worksheet multiple times and collect as much evidence as you could find! Evidence would include photos, ticket stubs, or anything else from a specific event! I would print this page out and manually fill it in with a pen to give a more personalized effect.
Step 4: Add Final Touches (Add personalized decorations to your case file card, the following ideas are optional. Have fun with it!)
A. Add coffee stains, paper clips, binder clips, stickers, and more to the case file to personalize it to your favorite person!
B. Add sticky notes with thoughtful or funny remarks to the card receiver.
C. Add cute mementos from your relationship to a clear ziplock bag. This would be located on top of all the documents and could fit bulky items that do not fit flat on the evidence sheets.
